A Father’s Priority

Posted - Mar• 02•16

“I can do it” the young boy said to his father.

“I know you can.  I just don’t want to see you get hurt.”

With that the father helped his son carry his school project from the car into his classroom.

“Thanks dad, I can get it from here.”

The father walked back to his car wondering when his son had grown up.  He couldn’t help but remember when his little boy practically begged him to come into his classroom.  Now, it wasn’t as if he minded his dad being there, but he didn’t seem to care as much.

“I guess that’s part of becoming a man,”  he thought to himself as he reflected back on the days when he had those aspirations.

“What is it about wanting to grow up that makes us sometimes forget to enjoy where we are right now?”  he thought.  “I never used to worry about anything until I grew up.  Now, I’m so concerned about the future that I forget to enjoy the present.”

The man turned the car around and drove back to the school.  He wanted to watch his son’s presentation.  He signed in at the front desk, and was issued a name tag.  There were a few other parents around, but not as many as there were when the kids were younger.   He waited patiently through all of the presentations until his son’s name was called.

His son looked out into the sparse audience and saw his dad.  His eyes lit up and a smile overtook his face.  He proceeded with his presentation, which made his dad realize how grown up he was.

Afterward the dad gave his son a hug, which he did not resist, and told him how good of a job he did.

That night when they were eating dinner the boy and his father talked about what he might do for next year’s project.

“Maybe we can start this weekend?”  the boy asked hopefully.

The dad thought about all of the projects and things that he was planning on doing.  Many of the things needed to get done before winter set in.

“That sounds like a great idea.”

The boy smiled again as the two of them ate in quiet.
