Are You Happy?

Posted - Aug• 12•14

“Are you happy?”

“That’s a good question.  I guess it depends who is asking.”

“I’m asking.  Are you happy?”

“Yes, for the most part.   I am happy at this moment, which I guess is all there is – this moment.”

Ask yourself, from yourself, “are you happy?”  It’s a question coming from you, to be answered by you, and to be only heard by you.  So, are you happy?  Take a few minutes to close your eyes and reflect on that question.  Reflect on your answer and come back to continue reading when you are done.

What came to mind?  If you are honest with yourself, you most likely are not always in a state of “happiness.”  Let’s face it, you are living in a physical body, with daily challenges and struggles.   There are things in your life that might “make you happy.”  However, happiness comes from inside.

Happiness, comes from that internal non-physical part of your self.  Happiness is not “created” from external people and events.  Happiness is what you have inside.  It is up to you to “let it surface” so that you can appreciate and love your physical world.

When we spend much of our valuable thoughts on negative events in the world, or negativity in general, we are blocking that internal happiness from surfacing.  When we are “acting,” we cannot let the world see the genuine self we have tucked away inside.   Everyone’s “genuine self” is pure, joyful, and full of happiness.  Let yours be seen and heard by the world at large.

Are you happy, can be a tough question to answer.  We sometimes “put on” like we have everything going for ourselves and thus, people assume that we are happy.  However, happiness is not for others to determine.  Happiness is a determination that only you can make for yourself, and others for themselves.  Happiness comes from inside – it is not bestowed upon us by others.  Are you happy?

The next question is, how can we get to happiness?  The answer to that question begins with an understanding of happiness.  What is happiness to you?  Take a moment to think about that, and then come back to reading.

When you can define happiness in terms that have little or nothing to do with the physical world, you have arrived at the source of happiness.  When you see that happiness can be had no matter your situation, you have an understanding of happiness.  Happiness is not about possessions, people, or events surrounding you.  No, happiness comes from inside.

One way to “get to happiness” is to start with gratitude.  Have gratitude for those physical possessions, people in your life, and events that are positive in nature.  Have gratitude for the warm bed for which you sleep, and the hot meals for which you ingest.  Have gratitude for the family for which you have a meaningful relationship.  Have gratitude for the breath you currently have in your lungs.

Happiness, begins with gratitude.  Gratitude exudes love.  Love, is the source of happiness.  Find that source, and you can always answer the question of are you happy, with a resounding “yes!”

This subject was appropriate for today and the content underscores the fact that happiness is an elusive state. It reminded me of the importance of continual review of priorities.
