Today is a good day to look inside and to see where you are in your life. Do you feel that you are moving towards your life-long beacons? Are you moving toward any of your beacons? Have you defined any beacons?
If you have not yet decided on what you want in this life, either in the long-term or shorter-term with a “beacon statement” now might be a good time. We have talked in the past about how a “beacon” is a “light house” on the shore that shines a light in the dark of night to help guide you to your destination.
I beacon might be, “I am a practicing physician,” for someone in college who is aspiring to go to medical school. Another beacon might be, “I am in a state of gratitude.” This might be a sort of mantra that you think about each day. Some days, you might be at that beacon, while another day you may have lost your way from it. The presence of this life-long beacon is for you to remember where you would like to be at each moment of your life.
Life-long beacons like “I am in a state of gratitude” are never “achieved.” The “state” you are in may change by the moment. As such, these beacons are always there for you to remember. Other life-long beacons might be something like, “I will leave the Earth better than it would be, had I not lived this life.”
Again, this type of beacon is not one that you can “check off” as done, like you might for others. No beacon is “right” and none is “wrong.” Whatever you define, so long as it is for the “higher good” of all in involved, and is backed by integrity, can be a beacon.
If you look at your life at this point, and see that we are almost half way through another calendar year, you might perform a sort of assessment on “where you are.” If you feel the year is ticking by and you do not think you’ve accomplished much or the things that you would like to achieve, you might define one beacon – right now.
Write it on a piece of paper, and tape it to your bathroom mirror, so that you can remember it. If you look at it for a few days and decide it is not what you want, feel free to change it. The destination can change as you get closer, since your perception of the world has changed along the way. It is perfectly okay to adapt and modify your beacons as you grow and provide more energy and thought to your life.

Periodically, an “assessment” of your life, your year, your week, or day is a good thing to do, so that you may determine if you are spending those “lifetime moments” intentionally.
