Controlling Power

Posted - Mar• 05•15

The king demonstrated his power with the wave of his hand, he sent troops into battle.  The question is how do you show your “power?”

Every person has some sense of “power.”   It could be the authority of employees whose livelihood is dependent upon their job.  It could be the authority over a group of people in a government position.  It could be the authority over your children.   At some level everyone experiences a sense of “power.”

The question becomes what exactly is “power?”   Power is the capability to direct energy.  The energy could be in the form of money, authority, or simply placing your foot on an ant hill.  Power comes from energy.

Now the question becomes, how do you exert your “power?”  Think of your relationships.  How are you using or not using your “power?”  In some cases you might use the power of your money to purchase an expensive gift for someone of whom, you know they could not otherwise afford.  In other cases you might use the “power” of your appearance to persuade someone into doing what you would like.

Others might not use their “power” at all.  In those cases, people who understand the power that they hold, might neutralize it or contain it so that it is never bestowed upon another.  Think about a recent argument you may have had with your partner.  Did you use the power that you hold in the relationship to help keep your partner at bay?

When we understand that the power we all possess is not a “power” at all, but rather a responsibility to others, we will allow the relationships to flourish naturally.  Letting go of the need to “control others” is usually the beginning to this understanding.  Even though the “control” might not be happening at a conscious level it is good to evaluate the “power” that you hold and how you might be using it for control.

If you find that you are using your “power” in your relationships, you might want to let go of that need and use the power of love instead.  Let go of the need to control anyone or anything and watch the world around you change!
