Sometimes there are days or parts of your day when you might feel a little sluggish. Your eyes are heavy, and you feel like you could just crawl up in bed and sleep – for days. However, most of the time you are not in a position to take a long nap. It is for those reasons that you need to develop some techniques to awaken and energize your body.
It all begins with the mind. When you think about something exciting it is only natural that those thoughts awaken and energize the body. However, when you think negative thoughts that make you sad, it is also only natural that your body adapts to represent those thoughts.
Take an inventory of your physical body at this point. How do you feel? Do you feel sluggish, or are you “raring to go?” What is your posture like? Are you sitting or standing straight and tall, or are you hunched and all sprawled out? Simple changes in your posture can also change the flow of oxygenated blood to your extremities.
After you look at the state of your body, now look at your mind. What are your thoughts at this moment? If you are reading this and are giving it your full attention, then what were you thinking about for most of the day? What were you thinking about prior to reading this message?
Now see if you can make a connection with your physical state and your mindful thoughts. Think about something that excites you. Maybe it’s a vacation at a beach or the view from atop a mountain. Maybe it’s the day your child was born. Maybe it’s your wedding day. What is one of the happiest days in your life? Put yourself there, and visualize the events around you. Now, use that happiness to send energy throughout your body. Sit up straight and tall. Relax your shoulders. Let your jaw relax. Close your eyes, and let go of all other thoughts.
When you open your eyes, you can now take another “body inventory.” You should feel some energy where you once maybe felt lethargic. Now think about something that is exciting for you – yet today. Maybe you are at the end of the day, and you are going to treat yourself with a few minutes of reading a good book. Maybe you are going to think about something that can excite you tomorrow.
Everyday, we need something for which we can look forward to. Find that thing, and if you cannot find anything at all, it’s time to pick up a hobby, a sport, or some activity that will help move your body and give you joy. We are not talking about extreme workouts, unless that gives you joy. We are talking about an activity for which you enjoy. Maybe it’s as simple as taking an evening walk with your mate and your pets.
