Finding Balance

Posted - Sep• 23•15

“What’s the good word?”

“Balance.  That’s what I try to teach my kids.”

“I like that.”

When we have balance in our lives, we are in the middle of “extremes.”  That means we can have consistency in our work and personal lives.  We can have consistency in our health and exercise regiment.  We can love ourselves and others in a balanced way.   It means we understand the importance of not over-compensating on one side, to find that it causes an “under-compensation” on the other side.

Think about your life, and the balance that you may or may not have.  Do you have a good balance between your work and personal life?  Do you have balance in your relationships with others and yourself?  Or are you starving yourself in order to take care of,  or to manage others?

When we live a life of balance, we have matured enough to understand the importance of over-compensating at the expense of other things.  Think of a see-saw at the park.  When you sit on one end and no one is on the other side, you will hit the ground, while the other end is high up in the air.  However, when someone else is sitting on the other end – say your mate, you can both adjust your position so that you are perfectly balanced.

When we give too much to others, without taking care of ourselves, we are out of balance.  When we spend much more time at work, and little time with our families, we are out of balance.  In the short-term, it might be necessary to have stints of being out of balance, but that cannot be a long-term habit.

Finding balance in your life means you may need to trade in those cigarettes for exercise.  It might mean you need to say “no” to others in order to take care of yourself.  However, when we find balance, we can grow and live a life of happiness and peace!
