Finish What You Start

Posted - May• 29•15

“Do not begin a task unless you plan to finish it.”

“Why not?”

“Because starting a task is easy, but finishing a task takes perseverance.  Unfinished tasks cause energy leaks that prevent you from focusing.”

It is easy to “start things” but it takes much determination to finish.  Whenever we start a new task, we expend energy.  That energy lies in wait until that task is completed.   When we complete a task, we can recover the energy of an “open task” and apply it elsewhere.  Having lots of “open tasks” consumes lots of energy that cannot be used elsewhere.

There are many other areas in your life where this concept of “energy lying in wait” is applied.  Think of the last time, you had something to do that kept popping into you head at inopportune times – like when you are trying to sleep.  As soon as you are able to release that “to do” item, either through completing the task, or adding it to a “task list” you can release that bit of energy required to keep that task alive in your mind.  You keep it “alive” so that you do not forget it.

Think of the energy required to manage these “open items” as being similar to the memory of a computer.  Items that are in the computer’s memory must be saved, or they will be lost when the power is turned off.  It takes energy to keep those unsaved items “alive.”  The same is true with yourself.  It takes energy to keep things that you need to do, “alive” in your brain.

So, what can you do to release that energy, so that it can be used elsewhere?  The first thing is to put together a system that works for you.  It could be a simple list of tasks hanging on your refrigerator.  It need not be extravagant.  The point is to put together some sort of system that allows for you to relinquish the energy used to keep things alive in your mind.

When we let relinquish the energies from managing our lives in our head, and understand the importance of starting and finishing a task before moving onto the next one, we will find ourselves having the energy to do all of those things!
