Each moment is yours to define. That means, you get to decide how you are going to spend it. Yes, you might be at work and your boss gives you a job to do. That may make you may feel like you do not have any choice on how to spend those moments. However, you always have a choice, you just need to find what those choices are.
We can always decide whether or not we are going to be happy in this moment or not. That is independent of the task at hand. We also get to decide on the focus that we will provide to the task. You can either focus on your task at hand, or attempt to do multiple things at once. Yes, some people may very well be able to “multi-task,” but we would argue that to truly be present in the moment, you must focus only on a single task.
Let’s suppose you are sitting with your mate, and you are having a nice conversation. Now, you feel the urge to open the newspaper and thumb through it while your mate is talking to you. Do you think that is a good choice? Is that really living in this moment – a moment that you might someday wish you could have back? Certainly not.
We need to decide consciously, how we are going to spend each moment. If we decided to read the newspaper, and our mate begins talking, you might need to make an adjustment, and spend the moment with your loved one. There are always priorities and shifts in how we spend our moments. The point is, we need to slow down and consciously choose our priorities.

When we walk, we focus on staying upright. When we talk, we focus on listening. When we eat, we taste the food. Life is full of distractions and beauty, we just need to slow ourselves down so that we can take it all in!
