“Do you remember all of the good times we used to have?”
“I do, but those memories are starting to fade.”
“Why do you suppose that is?”
“Maybe because it seems those days are over. I guess I need to create new memories today.”
“Yes, that seems like a good plan.”

When the memories begin to fade, but the emotional memory of happiness stays with you, it may be an indication that now is a great time to create new “happiness memories.”
The interesting thing about looking back on our lives, is that often times we look at a period of time with a sort of fondness, yet during that period we didn’t think things were all that great. Someday, you will most likely look back on this period of your life with that same fondness. The question is do you recognize that fondness now?
Whenever we get nostalgic for the past, we are longing for something that has already occurred. However, most of the time in our lives, we are longing for something in the future! What a conundrum, we have created for ourselves. Maybe today, is the day to begin looking at the “now” with that fondness we have for the past and the future?
When we go through life always looking behind or ahead of ourselves, we are ignoring the most important time – that being the present. Watch yourself today to catch yourself looking for the future or wishing for the past. Real yourself back in and find something that you can enjoy right now. It might be a butterfly out your window, or a smile from your mate. Maybe you could throw a smile someone else’s way. Your options are unlimited, and need not be anything great, by society’s standards.
When we try to measure our happiness using the rather large measuring stick created by society, we will most likely feel inadequate. Let go of the need to measure your success, your worthiness, and your happiness by the standards set by others. Happiness comes from within and it begins by recognizing this moment. Happiness is in the present, not something to be enjoyed in the future, or something that happened in the past that cannot be repeated.

Enjoy this moment and find happiness in it. Let yourself open up to the beautiful world around you and find where you fit in it – today! That place is going to be different from what it was a few years ago, and will change sometime down the road as well!
