Giving by Listening

“How was the massage?”

“Good, except he talked too much.   He told story after story and I just wanted a little quiet.”

There are times when we just need to listen.  When a person finds someone who is willing to listen, and seems truly interested in what they have to say, they may have a tendency to “let it all out.”  When you find yourself in those situations, understand that everyone needs someone to talk to, but finding a good listener can be challenging.

However, we have talked about having balance in your relationships – that includes listening versus sharing.  To keep a relationship healthy, the listening – sharing ratio must be close to even.  That rule, however, does not apply to short-term relationships with people you may never see again.

Yes, sometimes, you are placed in that person’s journey to be a “sounding board.”  In those cases, it’s not about you – but rather about giving.  Giving of your time and energy to hear what they have to say and to help them, if necessary, process whatever it is that needs processing.  We all have days when we just want to talk about something, and for some, they do not have the relationships built that allow for sharing with friends and family in their “network.”

As we travel though the journey of life, we meet many people.  Some of those people are placed on our path to help guide us, and move us forward on our journey, while others are here for us to help.  When we help another who’s life’s path has crossed with ours, we are sending the energy out into the universe that will someday be reflected back to us.
