Grateful Choices

Posted - May• 22•14

“Pick one.”

“The red one, please” replied the young son to his mother.

“I like red, too.  That’s a good choice.”

Life is full of choices.  Some choices are easier than others, while some choices are less obvious than others.  When we get the opportunity to choose between a set of options, we feel empowered.  We have the decision-making ability of choice.  We are the person who might be making the final decision.

Sometimes, the choices are less obvious.  Sometimes we do not even know that we have a choice at all.  For example, the choice of happiness.  Happiness comes from within, and we control everything inside of us.  We have the choice to be happy at this very moment – or not.  No one, or anything outside of us can change that.  Sure, our external environment can influence happiness, but happiness must be chosen from inside of us.  A decision that only you can make.

Think about one of your latest decisions.  It could have been a decision on what clothes to wear today, or maybe which candidate you will hire for an open position at your company.  No matter the decision, the question is whether or not you feel somewhat empowered by being able to make that decision.  Picking out your clothes for the day may not seem like a big deal to you, but give a person who owns nothing that choice and they will feel ecstatic.

Sometimes it’s the littlest choices that mean the most to others.  When we take for granted the choice between using a fork or a spoon, we may be forgetting to have gratitude for the food we are about to eat.  Each choice is not to be taken “for granted.”  Life is full of choices, and each one should be performed with gratitude.

When we consciously make decisions in both our external and internal “worlds” we are empowering ourselves to see the world with a sense of self-control.  We realize that our internal decisions are our own, to be exercised with gratitude and openness.  We have many more choices than we think we have.  Once we understand that our emotional state is a choice, we can begin to live the way we had once only dreamed of living.

Your state of mind, determines the state of your body and your life.  When you begin to “choose” the way you would like to live, only then can you start living the life you choose!
