How to Take A Body Inventory

Posted - Mar• 09•14

Do you ever stop what you are doing, sit quietly, and “listen” to your body?  Try it sometime today.  Let your body have the opportunity to communicate with you on what it needs.   Here’s how it works, but you may want to modify this approach for what feels “right” for you.

Sit quietly and close your eyes.  Listen to the sounds around you.  Focus on a sound possibly in the distance.  Let go of other “chatter” that is running around in your mind.   Take a deep breath through your nose.  Hold it, and let it release back through your nose.  Continue to do that, in  a slow gentle way.   Letting each breath be a little larger than the last.

Now, focus on your body.  You may want to start with your head and work your way down to your toes.  What do you feel?  Maybe you have a bit of tension in your left temple.   Maybe there is some tightness and pain in the left side of your lower back.   Maybe you feel the muscles on the back sides of your legs are contracted.

Give yourself as much time as you need.  It’s okay to let this process take as long as you would like.  After all, you deserve a little time to yourself, and for yourself.  Do the “body inventory” for as long as it takes for you to “feel” your body communicating with you.

Do you have any ideas why there is that pain in your lower back?  Do you feel the muscles contracting around the pain, in such a way it appears the muscles are trying to “protect” the pain from being released?   Do you feel your jaw clenching which may be the cause of the tension in your temple?  Are you nervous or stressed about something that may be causing you to contract your hamstrings?

Let go of your shoulders.  Release the tension and the muscles throughout your body.  Let yourself relax and let your body “tell” you what you need to do in order for it to be healed and functioning in a way that you would like.

While you are doing this, listen to so-called “random thoughts” that may pop into your head.  Maybe you “hear” yourself repeating, “no more french fries” or “eat more fruit.”  Pay attention to these thoughts that just pop into your head.   That is your inner self communicating what you need to do to maintain a healthy body.

This process is just one of the many things that you can do in order to begin the meditation process where you “open up” to the outside world in the non-physical dimension.  Even without opening up to that outside world, you are taking a rather physical inventory of your body.  You may realize things like maybe you are clenching your jaw which is causing your headaches, or that you are contracting your hamstrings that is causing you pain in the lower back.

The “bonus” of this approach, if you will, is when you get the “messages” in the form of random thoughts.  Pay attention, and listen to those “messages” for they could be very important to your future self.

Take the time throughout the day to spend a few minutes doing a “body inventory.”  You may find that there are things that you do in your day that are causing you stress and pain.
