When we focus our energies, we are like a laser that can cut through steel. When we have scattered energy, we illuminate a larger region with a much duller light. The question is, do you want to have focused energy that is more powerful, or scattered, less powerful energy?
Remember back to an instance where you were so focused you could move quickly and efficiently to get whatever task you were doing done. Now, think of a time when you could not focus and found it difficult to complete any task at all. Which “energy state” are you in right now?
When we learn how to focus our attention on one thing, the energy follows. The energy always follows our attention. When we have our attention scattered across many things, the energy follows in a scattered way as well. Think about the possibilities of focusing your attention with laser-like accuracy.
Many people talk about their ability to multi-task. However, one might argue, that even though it appears that a lot of tasks are being managed, that they are not being managed with your full attention. When we put our full attention into a task, we are giving it our best! When we split our attention across many tasks that we are performing simultaneously, we are not able to give each task our best. That is just the way it is!
Yes, there are times when you may need to “multi-task,” for sometimes we have little other choice. However, there are lots of times when you can choose which task to place your attention, and give it your energy.
A great example, is when you are conversing with another person. You can think about something else while he or she is talking, or you can listen intently. Which do you think is more courteous and rewarding?
