When you think of the past, what do you remember most? Does the past inspire you and lift you up, or bring you down? What is it about the past that you are most attached to?
These are questions for you to get an understanding of how you feel about past experiences. For many, they might remember their childhood – either positively or negatively. For others, it might be more recent. The question to ask yourself is whether or not you are learning from the past or trying to live in the past?
When we can remove the emotional component of our memories with past experiences that were not the way we would have liked, we can use the past to help us learn on how to approach this very moment. When we learn from the past, we are observing our behaviors in a way that might help us today. The past is your “history,” when you learn from it, you can avoid repeating it.
If you look at your “history” and observe periods of time when you might have been able to do things differently, you can be better prepared if those situations occur again. Think about what is going on in your life now. Have you been here before? If so, remove the emotional component and observe yourself the last time you were in this situation. What could you have done differently that might have helped you get through it? Now, see if you might be able to apply some of those techniques now.
Remember, that you can only change your own behaviors. The behaviors and actions of others is outside of your control, so there is no point in trying to figure out what others could have done differently. You also need to take responsibility for your own actions and behaviors. We need to own our actions and learn from them – even when we feel we have been “wronged” by another.

The past is our life’s history. When we learn from our history, we can avoid repeating it in the future. After all, until we learn the lesson the universe will continue to present us with the homework!
