The young woman left the theatre with her bag on her shoulder and walked to the subway. While she was waiting for the train, she thought about her day.
She had auditioned for a small part in a Broadway show, and had earned that job. Now, she practiced and rehearsed almost constantly so that she could make the most of this big opportunity. It was an opportunity to get her foot in the door and to build her resume for bigger parts down the road.
As she sat on a bench on the train, she rubbed her feet. She figured by now she could walk on glass and nothing would penetrate the thick skin she developed. That thick skin would do well for her if she could develop it in other parts of her life as well. She was constantly being corrected, and adjusted. When she finally did get the scene right, there were no accolades, but rather, they would quickly move onto the next one. She understood though, that this was business, and she was now a professional. If applause was to be heard, it would now have to be earned.
When she arrived home, she soaked in a nice hot bubble bath. That was her reward each night, for a well-earned rest. She drifted off in her thoughts and fell asleep.
She began to dream. In the dream she had the lead role in the performance. She sang and danced flawlessly. However, she realized that she was on the stage, but was watching herself from the audience. She sat with others as they watched the show. She could see herself, but did not feel that she actually was the person on the stage.
Confused, she ran out of the auditorium to catch her thoughts. She met an older man sweeping in the lobby.
“Can I help you miss?”
“I’m not sure. I’m a bit confused. I see myself up on stage, but I’m in the audience as well.”
“Congratulations.”
“Congratulations? For what?”
“You have reached a level of awareness that few people attain.”
“How so.?”
“You are in fact up on the stage, giving the performance of your life. However, the real you is sitting in the audience – watching it all play out. When a person realizes that they are on the stage, they can observe the show – with little emotion. You have done that.”
“How can I be in two places at once?”
“You are the observer of the person on that stage. You are the observer of your body and this lifetime. When you realize that, you figure out that you are in your own sort of movie. As the observer, you can remove yourself enough to see the world through a different set of eyes.
Think about this. When you are acting do you know you are acting?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Well, what if you were acting and you didn’t know it was a play? What if you thought it was all real?”
“That would be rather weird, but that’s a little ridiculous. Everyone in the play knows it’s not real.”
“Well, let me tell you. Everyone on this Earth is acting and most people do not know it. Tonight, you were able to see the play from the audience as an observer. The real you, is in fact the observer – not the person housed in that body.”
The woman then awoke with a state of clarity. She was not only an actress in her career, but realized that her entire life is sort of an act. She could feel a shift that allowed for her to feel the presence “behind” her eyes.
