“Listen for the energy. That is the statement to analyze. When we can begin to understand how to ‘listen’ with all of our senses, we can experience the unseen energies that are continuously flowing through us.”
The man thought about these comments made by his spiritual teacher. He had been walking now for days through the desert. His body was starting to blister almost everywhere. He had a caravan accompanying him, but the conversation dwindled to only a few words an hour. The strain of the journey was beginning to take its toll on everyone. Conversation took too much energy, and there were few things left to talk about.
As the wind blew the sand across their faces covering any indication of a path, the caravan navigated their way slowly across the rolling hills of sand. The man wondered what ever brought him to such a place and why he had decided to attempt to cross the vast desert.
He thought back to his childhood, when he was growing up in the plains. He could run through the tall grasses, fall down and hide. No one would ever find him if he didn’t want them to. Sometimes, he would run into the middle of a field, and lie in the grasses looking up at the blue sky. As he watched the clouds, he attempted to move them with his thoughts to make various shapes. Yes, that was quite a bit different from where he was now.
The energy of the desert seemed to overtake all of his senses. As the wind blew, the sand pelted against any exposed parts of his body. He left nothing exposed to the elements as he kept his body covered. He came on this trip to experience something he had never experienced, and now he was getting that. As the group slowly made their way, ever surely, he stayed with them.
As his thoughts drifted off, he began to think more about the energy that he was trying to find. How could he feel the subtle unseen energy, when he was getting pelted with the sand and the wind? He didn’t know if this was the right venue for his search.
That night, he laid in his tent listening to the occasional winds outside. The nights were usually much more calm than the day. He could hear the wind start to settle down and went outside to see a sky filled with stars. It was as though the transition from day to night catapulted him to another place. The stillness was breathtaking with the views of the lit sky. He had never seen anything like it, for the first few days were cloudy with the wind blowing the dust into the sky.
He could feel an energy flowing through his body. He didn’t really know how to describe it, except for the feeling of almost heart burn or hunger. He listened with his body to feel the energy of the universe.
He sat quietly with himself and closed his eyes to meditate. He could see a swirling paint-like violet color in his mind’s eye. The color was beautiful and seemed to come closer and closer to him. As it approached, the energy overtook his body like it was being warmed next to a fire. However, there was no fire tonight.
He kept repeating to himself over and over again, “listen for the energy.” He could feel the warmth overtake him as he kept his mind clear. He tried not to focus on the energy, nor the beautiful violet color he could see through his closed eyes. He sat in silence, while focusing on his breathing and the sensation that was overtaking him.
After a long-time, the energy left as did the violet swirl he could see in his mind. He opened his eyes and realized that he had found the experience for which he searched. He then realized that the wind and the sand pelting his body for days was necessary for him to get to a state of absolute quiet and solitude. Yes, this was the energy for which he was searching, and he felt that he could reproduce it when he returned home.
Days later, on the flight back to his home, the man sat in the cramped airplane, closed his eyes, and found his energy and violet “light” again. He sat for the entire, long, flight enjoying the “show.”

When we “listen” with all of our senses, we discover things that have previously gone unnoticed.
