As you are preparing for this day, you might think about all of the upcoming things that you need to do. You might have work today, or school, or maybe you are retired or have the day off. The question that you need to ask yourself, is what do you have to look forward to today?
Many people, will reply with, “nothing.” However, the happy people always find something in their day for which they can look forward to. They always find a part of their day that is their “ice cream” for maybe a hard day of work. They find a reason for getting up today rather than just earning a pay check.
The same is true for this week, month, year, decade and lifetime. Now, you need to be a bit careful, though. If you are in your twenties, and you are looking forward to retirement at age sixty – you might be missing out on your life right now. What we are saying is that at every stage of your day and your life, you need to provide yourself with some sort of reward. Like eating ice cream after a healthy meal of vegetables.
The “reward” mind you, must be one that has integrity and is for the higher good of all. It can be something as small as an ice cream cone after your lunch, or a walk in the park. It might be your commute where you can listen to music, a book on tape, or a motivational speaker. It might be taking a bath before you retire for the night. It can be anything, so long as you make the conscious decision for “something.”
Many people spend their day on “auto-pilot” and then get to the end of the week, without much to show on the “happiness scale.” Sure, they might be “fine” but not much else. Life is more than “fine,” but it takes a conscious effort. It doesn’t happen on its own.
Look at someone you know that always seems happy. If you do not know of anyone, look around today for someone who is smiling and seems to enjoy their job and their life. Do you think that for some reason their life is somehow “better” than yours and therefore happiness is just “given” to them?
We would argue that the happy person knows how to be happy no matter what they are doing. They could be spinning a sign on a street corner advertising a restaurant, or cleaning rooms at a hotel. No matter what happy people do, they are still happy.
That is because they have learned how to make their life and their work fun. They have learned that happiness is not something that is given to them, but rather that happiness comes from inside. They have learned that happiness is a decision, and they have decided to let their happiness enter their life.
Find a reason today to be happy. Tomorrow, find two reasons to be happy. The next day, three reasons, and so forth. Eventually, you will only see happiness in your life. The choice is yours.

Happiness is not something that is bestowed upon you, but rather something that you find within you. Let your happiness come to the surface and just see how your life changes.
