Me Time

Posted - Aug• 06•14

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.  I just need a little time to myself.”

“Okay.  I get that.”

Sometimes we need to find a quiet “corner of the world” where we can be by ourselves.  For people who live with others, work with others, and live in a populated area, it is important to find time where you can just “be” by yourself.  Everyone needs time to just “let go” of all responsibilities, and to “shut down” the outside world.  Everyone needs a little “me time.”

The world has become so “loud” that we are often bombarded with electronic communications, while traversing our way through populated areas to get to and from work.   For those with families in their home, and having responsibilities for those families, it may seem like there is never a “break” to be had.  A time where you can sit, put your feet up and just be quiet.  A time when you can close your eyes, and clear your mind.  A time when you can go into a quiet room, and “curl up” with a good book.  A time for “me.”

Granted, it can be difficult to think of yourself when the family is calling for you.   With young children, often times the only “me time” is when they are sleeping.  Sometimes, though, we can take the time for ourselves, but we feel guilty, or feel like we are being selfish if we do so.

Sometime ago, we talked about how the flight attendant gives instructions to place the oxygen mask on yourself before your child.  They understand that if you do not have oxygen, you will not be in a position to help your child.  They understand the need to help yourself first, so that you are able to help others.  They understand the need for your health.  Maybe it’s time that you understand a bit of that too.

So many people go through their days and their lives serving others, but forget to serve themselves.  We are not saying that you should cut all ties, and responsibilities.  What we are saying is that you should make room in your day, every day, for a little time to yourself.   You need not make a “big deal” of it to your mate and family – you can just start doing it.   No matter if it’s five minutes, or a few hours, find some time for yourself – time other than when you sleep.

Life runs by us pretty quickly.  We need to make sure that we take care of ourselves along the way.  That is the biggest gift we can give to our families!
