Mother Daughter Time

Posted - Mar• 29•16

“Is today the day?”

“Yup.”

“Oh, I totally forgot.”

“Well, it’s not too late.”

The young girl wondered how she was going to prepare for the big day.  It was a day that she had been looking forward to, but somehow it had slipped her mind.  It’s a good thing her mom reminded her.

She went into her room and looked through her closet.  What was she going to wear?  As she looked at the clothes and the old costumes tucked neatly away in the back of the closet, it reminded her of her youth.  Not that she was old now, but when she was much younger.  It was a time when her problems turned out not to be problems at all – but rather little things that she thought were problems.

I wonder what I’m making a problem out of right now, that I will someday look back on and realize that it was only a problem in my head?  Maybe this whole thing is something that I’m blowing out of proportion.  Maybe I should just take it easy today and enjoy it rather than buckling to the pressures of looking the best.

She sat on the floor looking around her room.  She was about to graduate high school and she would be soon moving out of the house to begin a life on her own.  How did the time go by so quickly?  She had lots of thoughts and became nostalgic about her life.   My life has been a relatively good one, up to this point.  I wonder what it will be like in the future.  I wonder how I’ll do with the pressures of college and living on my own.  I feel ready, but at times I would like it to stay the way it is – even though I know that is not possible.

She looked at her old doll house collecting dust and remembered the moments when she and her dad had built it.  It was as though time had stopped when they were working on it.  She realized that it was probably more fun building the doll house than it was playing with it after it was finished.

At that moment, she realized something.  What if it’s not the finish line, but the race?  What if life is just about being there along the way rather than achieving something?

She had an idea.

“Mom will you help me find something to wear?”  She hollered down the stairs.

“Honey, I think Sarah is calling you.”   Her father said over is breakfast.

She set down her coffee and quickly moved towards the stairs.

“Coming.”

The mother entered Sarah’s room with a huge smile.

“What are you thinking you would like to wear?”

Sarah, smiled back with enthusiasm.

“What do you think?”

The two of them spent the next few minutes, that seemed like hours, laughing and giggling as they looked at the old costumes.

Sarah really didn’t care anymore about what she was going to wear, she only cared about that moment with her mother!

When we get caught up in outcome, we have a tendency to ignore the journey.  Let life take you where it must, but remember to roll down the window of the bus to let the wind blow through your hair along the way!
