Overcoming Distractions

Posted - Dec• 02•15

“What do you do when things happen so fast?”

“I slow them down.”

“How do you do that?”

“I focus on one thing and let the other things pass me by.”

Yesterday, we talked about racing minds.   Today, we would like to talk about the “racing world.”  Things around us are happening at the speed of a text, tweet, or email.   Everything changes faster than ever, and information is constantly bombarding us.  During these periods, if you are not intentional about where you care to spend your time, you may feel like you are furiously treading water and getting no where!

Think about the past 24 hours.  Where have you spent your time?  Are you engaged in what you are doing, or are you constantly distracted?   Are the distractions necessary, or have you created them yourself?  Yes, the world has changed in this electronic revolution, however, we have changed as well.  Today, might be the day to begin to take back your time and focus your attention in the areas that need it.

Over the past week or so, many have gathered together for a holiday.  Did you find that satisfying?  Were you present and engaged?  Were the people around you?  Most people mirror what others are doing.  As such, if you do not engage it is quite possible those around you are not as well.  Conversely, when you are engaged and present, that encourages those around you to do the same.

As you go about this day, think about where you would like to place your energies.  Then throughout the day, take a pulse of those intentions to see how well you are doing, and to pull yourself back to what you feel is important.   Try to identify the unnecessary distractions that eat away at your time, energy and your day.

This is a wonderful life.  However, in this day and age it may be challenging to stay focused and engaged in what is important to you.  Make the shift back to that state today!
