Physical Mindfulness

The man rode his bicycle slowly up the hill.  He was pedaling ever so slowly, but steadily.  He shifted into his lowest gear to make the pedaling a little easier, while lessening the progress he made with each cycle.  The sweat dripped over his eye brows as he kept his head looking straight in front towards his destination.  His heart beat was quicker now, as he could feel the burn in his quadriceps.   “Almost there,”  he encouraged himself.  “I can make it.”

As he crested the hill, he could now  shift into a higher gear, letting his legs gain some rest as he glided through the flat portion of the path.  “A year ago, I couldn’t even think about riding this hill.  Today, I’m riding it without stopping.”

A year ago, the man weighed nearly an extra fifty pounds.  He had reached a point in his life where he decided it was time to do something about the health of his body.  He had been working on his “mind” with meditation on nearly a daily basis.   During the last year, he gave up his addictions, and began exercising on a regular basis.  As he enjoyed the cool, morning air, he gave himself credit for his accomplishments.   “I feel better than I have in twenty years.  I’m not getting older, but getting better.”

As we age, there are many different ways that things may go.  The body may show the years that may have taken a toll in its various joints, such as the back.  However, for many, the body can be tuned to fit its age.  It may not have the muscle mass that it once had, but that can be replaced by flexibility that it never had.  There are different ways to “tune” the body as we age.  It all begins with a commitment and a desire to let the health of your mind, enter the health of your body.

As we “open up” to the world “beyond” we tune our mind to think differently.  We begin to look inside ourselves for the answers, rather than to others.  Eventually, we begin to look at our physical self.  We see that we can only go “so far” with our “awakening” if we have addictions.  We begin to realize that we need our body to reflect the state of our non-physical self so that we are living our awareness at all levels of our lives.

Let go of the need to be “perfect,” but grasp the desire to let our “inside” shine to our physical selves.  We are not saying to have surgeries to “repair” our appearance.  No, we are saying that your belief system should be reflected in your physical self.  If you believe in happiness and joy coming from within, it would then make sense that happiness and joy is also enjoyed in the physical world.  Sometimes to enjoy those things, it might require a healthy, fit, body.

To travel the world, it is much easier without a shortness of breath when climbing the flight of stairs to see the historical landmark.  In order for you to maximize your happiness and joy, you need a body to match your desires.  Begin to look at ways in which you can simply let your “inside” shine to your physical self.

When you apply the techniques of mindfulness to your physical body, you will see that it is only natural for your body to reflect what you feel inside.
