Plan Your Work

Posted - Feb• 25•16

“How do you get so much done in a day?”

“I plan my work, and focus on one thing at a time.”

In this day of “multi-tasking” you might be having a difficult time focusing.  When we have many things going on at the same time we cannot be mindful with any one of those things.  Today, might be a good day to step back and observe yourself on how you accomplish tasks.

Much like an architect designs the building to communicate to others what needs to be done, you need to “design” your tasks.  That means, you figure out in as much detail as possible everything that needs to be done, and how you are going to do it.  That way, when it’s time to implement the task, you can just do!

It’s when we know what needs to be done, but do not know how we’re going to do it, that we can get immobilized by analysis.  The old saying, “paralysis by analysis” has much wisdom.  In this case, we are talking about doing the appropriate planning for the task at hand, prior to beginning work on the task.  Yes, the planning might happen right before you implement the task, but it is best if it’s done prior to working on the task itself.

Why do we talk about things like this?   Because everything that you do is all related to your personal growth.  When we learn how to put our environment in some sort of “order” we can put ourselves in “order” as well.  It’s difficult to put our minds and thoughts in “order” when our physical selves are scattered.   Yes, we cannot “control” anything including our environment, but we can bring some sense of order to it, so that we can move effortlessly within it.

Look at how you go about your tasks today.  Are you planning your work and working your plan?  If not, take the time to plan your work, your tasks, and your day.  Take the time to doing the “design” for each task so that when it’s time to do the work you are ready.  Watch those tasks get completed with what seems like little effort!

When we gain a sense of order in our surroundings and our physical life, we can then provide a sense of order to our non-physical, and emotional worlds.  Begin by planning your work so that it is much easier to later do that work!
