When we begin to get “dull” we need to “sharpen ourselves.” There are periods in our lives when we might be getting a bit “dull.” That means we are not performing our daily tasks at the normal level. It could be something as simple as not washing the dishes so they are clean, or leaving streaks on the mirror when we wipe it. The point is, that sometimes we are not on our “A” game.
When we feel like we need a “sharpening” we can always look to ways on energizing ourselves. We might look at why we need sharpening in the first place. Is it a physical issue, a mental issue, or an emotional one? That will determine what it is we might need to do. That is, which “stone” we should use to sharpen our skills.
Suppose we realize that we just don’t have a lot of energy anymore, and really find it difficult to function. Maybe we just don’t seem to care like we used to. Now, you must ask yourself whether or not you are okay with it. Maybe you are okay with the streaks in the mirror, where in your younger years you were much more particular. If that is the case, then go with it. Let go of the need for perfection. However, if you would like to function closer to the level that you once did, you need to do some work to sharpen those skills that are hiding under the “dull blade.”
The first step in sharpening those skills after you identify the root cause of the “dullness” is to make a conscious decision that this is something you want. If you are not on board with this change you will not have success. The desire for the change must come from you in your heart.
After you make that conscious decision for the change to hone your skills, you can proceed with the work that you know you need to do. Find ways to energize yourself so that you care about the things that you are doing. It might be to go take a walk to get your blood flowing. If there are physical issues, you might need to hire a physical therapist or trainer to guide you back into shape. Maybe a dietician can help so that you are putting the correct fuels into your body that can give you energy.
Deep down you already know what it is that needs to be done. Now the challenge is to do it! The skills were once there, and maybe will never be to the level that requires a younger body, but you can get close. With the proper mindset and desire, you can accomplish anything.
