Sway Like the Palm Tree

Posted - Mar• 05•14

The trees sway as the wind increases in velocity while the hurricane begins to reach the shoreline.  Most of the largest trees have already fallen from past storms, but the palm trees on the beach remain, as they bend ever so gently in the direction of the wind.  Yes, the palm trees will once again survive this storm, ready to stand tall when the sunshine returns.

There are many so-called “storms” that seem to appear within your life.  However, since there are no accidents, the storms, too are in perfect order.  The storms may not even be a storm if you evaluate it carefully.  For the surfers ready to hit the beach prior to the hurricane making landfall, the “storm” is an opportunity to accomplish new achievements.

In your life, when it appears to many that a storm has reached your home, you may look for the opportunities of growth that it may present to you and your family.  The storms of your life are only “storms” if you let them be a storm.   You can assume the role of a palm tree, and let the storm simply “go around” you.  You may need to bend gently in the direction of the wind, but make yourself “small” and pliable to avoid any damage.

The palm tree is not as strong as other trees, but can survive high winds because it is “flexible.”  Other trees, grow so large that when the winds blow they begin to sway and crumble under their own weight.  Palm trees, on the other hand, have little weight that they carry, and are able to flex with the wind so that they can let the wind simply pass them by.

Think of times in your life when you were like the large, sturdy, (possibly stubborn) tree that did not care to bend in the wind.   Now, think of other times when you were like the flexible palm tree, able to “go with the flow” and to let the wind pass you by, without even noticing that a storm was brewing.

There is no need to let one’s own stubbornness and ego get in the way of happiness and joy.  The “weight” of one’s righteousness can cause much stress on the “trunk” of your life.  Think about how easy it can be to let all of the stresses and frustrations of life, simply pass you by.

You might ask how that can be an easy thing to do?   Well, we would argue that it takes much more energy to plant your feet solidly in the ground and stand tall during those high winds, when if you turn your back to those winds, and touch your knees it will pass you by.   The energy of the “wind” is the same as the energy of the “storm.”   Letting it pass you by, always is the “easiest” thing to do.  However, the ego wants to show how strong you are, and often will convince you that you need to do otherwise.

When the sunshine of your life returns, (even though it is always shining, you just need to look for it), you can begin to stand tall again, and live your life.  The “storms” can either quickly pass you by, or become stationary above your life, the choice is yours.

Have the flexibility of the palm tree, to flow and sway with the flexibility necessary to survive and thrive in any situation.  The need to stay “strong” and rigid may cause you to crumble under the “weight” and stresses that you place upon yourself.
