The young girl threw back the covers and jumped out of bed.  She was excited for the day.  Today was her birthday and she could barely sleep last night because she was thinking about it.

Today I turn eight, she thought to herself.  I cannot believe how old I am getting.  This is going to be the best day ever.

As she was brushing her teeth she looked into the mirror.   As she looked at her face she focused on her eyes.  She went deep within her beautiful blue eyes into the very core.   It was almost as though she was being transported to another place.  A place she had never been.  Although it was different, she knew it was safe and was excited to see where she was going.

As she watched her surroundings changing, she could see a lady in the distance.  The lady was approaching her, and the little girl could make out her beautiful, long hair.  The lady was wearing a white dress that dragged behind her.  She could see her wearing the biggest smile that the girl had ever seen.  She wondered if the lady might be a princess.

When the beautiful lady approached, she softly said, “do not be afraid, little Maria.  I am here for you.”

The little girl looked through her big eyes with a smile herself.

“Where am I?”

“You are at the place that you have created.  This is your magical land.”

“Really?  I thought all of those things were just made up.”

“Oh no, nothing is made up.  It is all very real.  Would you like to look around?”

“Yes, I would like that very much.”

“Take my hand.

Maria placed her hand into the soft hand of the lady and they quickly were transported to another place.  It was a place that Maria had imagined many times when she played with her dolls.  Everything was just as she had envisioned it in her mind, built up over hours of play time.

“Wow, this is just as I imagined it.”

“Yes, you created this place. ”

The girl could see the cats and dogs were playing together.  The bears and the lions played with the zebras.  Everyone was happy and playing.  It was her vision for how the world she be.

“Why is it that we all cannot play together in the real world?”

“We can, it’s just that so many people do not look past the shell of others.”

“Shell?  What does that mean?”

“It means the cats know that they do not like dogs, and most of them do not accept the dogs into their community.  The zebras know that the lions would like to kill them for food, so they stay away.  Much of it is instinct, but some of it is based on their beliefs.”

“Well, I’m not going to eat a zebra, and I believe that cats and dogs can like each other, too!”

“Good for you.”

Then the lady touched Maria on her nose.

“Remember that as you grow older, with each birthday, this day we had together.  Anything is possible, so long as you bring people together. ”

When she lifted her finger, the girl was back in her bathroom brushing her teeth.  She blinked her eyes several times trying to figure out what had happened.

That night when she was ready to blow out the candles on her cake, she thought about her adventure with the princess.  I can do anything, so long as I bring people together.  I wonder how many other people know that secret?

She looked out at her family and friends gathered to help her celebrate her birthday and could feel the energy generated with their love.  Then she understood.

As the years went by, she remembered that statement with every birthday thereafter.  She never went back to see the princess, but she knew that day was very real.
