“Follow me. I see a bunch over here.”
“Okay, wait up. I’m coming.”
The two bees flew ever so gently to the newly found flowers, where they each landed onto a luscious daisy.
“So I know this tastes good, but why are we doing this again?”
“We’re doing it so we can help keep the flowers alive. They need us.”
“But I’m so small. How can I matter?”
“You matter, because you care. We all matter, it’s just that many people think that they can’t make a difference so they quit trying.”
Later that night, the young honey bee thought about the conversation he had earlier with his father. It was hard to believe that he being so small in what seemed like an infinitely large world, was needed to help make plants and flowers survive. He beamed with pride that night as he fell asleep.
The next morning, he asked to go out again into the flower fields.
“No, you need to stay and work on the honey.”
He felt like he knew the hive inside and out, and wanted to go out and explore the world.
“When I’m finished can I go out of the hive?”
“Sure, but not until I say you can go.”
The bee worked side-by-side with all of his friends and family. They talked while they worked, but the noise was so loud, he couldn’t really hear what anyone was saying.
Later that afternoon, his mother told him he could leave.
“Freddy, do you want to go out of the hive and explore?”
“Sure, let me check with my mom first.”
The two bees flew out of the hive, but were told to stay together.
“Let’s take turns leading, so that we do not get separated. You go first.”
They flew to the field of flowers that were closing up for the evening.
“This is where I was yesterday, so I didn’t have to work in the hive.”
After flying around the flower fields and exploring, the two of them landed on a yellow sun flower.
“Did you know that we matter in the world? The plants and flowers need us for survival. We help them grow.”
“That’s crazy, we are so small and the world is so big. I didn’t know that.”
“I wonder what else we can do.”
The two bees fell asleep as night began to fall when one of them suddenly awoke.
“Freddy, we fell asleep. We need to get back to the hive.”
“Which way do we go? I can’t see anything.”
The bees began to panic and decided that they better stay put for the evening. They heard a noise. It was the sunflower speaking to them.
“You can stay with me for the night. I’ll protect you.”
Just then, the sunflower opened up and the bees flew inside. It was nice and warm and they felt very welcome.
“Feel free to eat whatever you like” the sunflower instructed.
“Thank you. Thank you very much for helping us.”
“No, thank you for helping me and my family for generations!”

When we realize the world is large and we are small, there is a tendency to think that we cannot help in any way. However, when we begin to understand that everyone makes a difference, we look for ways to help rather than for reasons not to!

Different, but it has a message! Thanks again, Pat.
