The Happiness Decision

Posted - Nov• 17•14

“What makes you happy?”

“Nothing.”

“What do you mean nothing?  You always seem so happy”

“I discovered a long time ago, that nothing can make me happy.  However, I also discovered that everything can make me happy – if I let it.”

“So are you happy?”

“Yes, because I have decided that I will always see the good in everything – which helps keep me in a state of happiness.”

Happiness is an interesting concept.  We have been programmed to think that happiness “comes from something” outside of you.   Chasing happiness in external people, things, and events can bring some a sense of joy to you, but that joy is often short-lived.  Eventually, the money, the people, the events lose their luster, and we need to find something else to bring what we think is happiness.

If you find yourself “chasing happiness” external to your inner self, you may some day feel a sense of emptiness.  Usually, as we age we discover that emptiness and are perplexed as to the cause.  What we need to do is to start understanding that happiness is “born” inside of you.  Happiness is a choice not a gift.  Happiness can be had by all, at all times.  The question is whether or not you will choose to enjoy it.

Now, that choice may be easier said than done.  In practice, it can be difficult to stay in a constant state of happiness and joy.  We understand that there are times for grieving and times for joy.   The goal, however is to let happiness be the “root” of your emotions.  Let the river of happiness run through your veins, with temporary lapses to experience and express other emotions.  What is running through your veins?  Is it happiness and joy, or bitterness and anger?

If it is the latter, you can change.  That is the good news.  That is where you make the choice as to what type of person you would like to be – from this moment forward.   Walk through the door, and enter the world of happiness and joy – leaving the world of negativity behind you.  It is as simple as that!

The thing that you may find is that you have never before made a decision as to what type of emotions you would like your life to be rooted within.   Most people just live day-by-day, moment-by-moment without intentionally thinking about how they would like to behave, live, and to experience the world and this lifetime.   Do you want to find the good in all, or do you feed the ego with the cynicism and negativity of the world?  One feeds the other.   Seeing good, helps to support a state of positive emotions, while seeing the bad feeds the negative emotional side of you.

Today is the day to decide how you are going to live the rest of your life.  Are you going to let happiness and joy run through your veins, or are you going to continually feed the ego with bitterness and anger?  The choice is yours and yours alone.  See the world for the beauty that it contains, and you will wonder why you didn’t choose a world of happiness sooner!
