“Why is it that people who claim to know the answers, seldom do know them, and people not claiming to have the answers often have them?”
“I don’t know dear.”
“Does that mean you have the answer, if you tell me you don’t know?” The boy replied with a chuckle.
“I wish I had those answers for you honey.”
The boy went to sleep that night thinking about his discussion with his mother. The next morning he awoke and was getting ready for school when he heard a voice. He turned to see who was talking to him, but no one was there.
“Down here.”
He looked towards the ground and could barely make out a little man waving his arms.
“Do not be afraid,” the man said. “But also, be careful so that you do not step on me.”
The boy carefully lowered to his hands and knees so that he could have a better look at the man. He laid his hand on the ground with his palm facing upward, next to the man. The man quickly walked over and climbed into the palm of his hand. He struggled a bit, but was able to make the climb.
“Who are you?”
“I am the answer to your question.”
“Which question is that?”
“Oh, that is for you to figure out.”
“Is it the question on why the people who claim to have the answers, seldom do, while those that do not claim to have the answers often have them?”
“That would be the one.”
“However, if you claim to have the answer to my question does that mean that you are claiming to have an answer for which you have none?”
“Very good. No that is not the case for me.”
“So what do you want from me?”
“I would like to go with you to school. Can you wear a shirt with a pocket, and I can climb along for the ride?”
The boy quickly looked for a shirt with a pocket and finally found one that was given to him for a gift that he had yet to wear. He cut off the tags and slipped it on. Then he picked up the little man and guided him into the pocket.
“Just make sure no one sees you. Everyone will think I’m crazy if someone discovers you.”
“No worries, you are the only one who can see me. To everyone else I do not exist and even if they look at me, they will not be able to see or hear me.”
“Good, let’s go then.”
The boy quickly ate his breakfast and made his way to school. On the walk the man chatted almost continuously. He was happy to be back in the physical world, for he seldom gets a chance to come back.
“Do you see those trees? They have lived through many winters and summers and yet they still look happy. They love contributing to the betterment of the environment.”
“Look over there. That butterfly is happy as well. Spring is here and she can finally come out into the sunshine. I love spring, don’t you?”
“Yes, but I haven’t really thought about it much.”
The two spent the day together with the little man talking throughout the day. That night they were in the boy’s room having another discussion.
“You said you had the answer to my question. So what is it?”
“Okay, let’s talk about it. The people who think they have the answers often tell people they do because of their ego. They want to have the answers to the difficult questions and problems of the world. However, those who do not claim to have the answers often do because they do not live by the ego, but by their heart instead. ”
“What is the ego?”
“The ego is that part of you, that little voice if you will, that wants to encourage you to look good, to impress others, to feel hurt, to justify your anger, etc.”
“Oh, I know that little voice. I didn’t realize that was the ego, though.”
“Yup. That’s it.”
“Well how do I ignore it and listen to my heart instead?”
“It’s difficult to ignore, but once you recognize it speaking, you can choose not to listen to it. That’s when your heart will have a chance to speak, and you might actually hear it?”
“What does my heart sound like?”
“It sounds like me!”
“Are you my heart?”
“Well, not your actual heart, but I am that part of your non-physical self. Your soul if you will, that came into the physical world to help you understand these difficult questions.”
“You mean, you are a part of me?”
“Yes, that’s what I mean.”
“So that means I had the answer to my own question?”
“Bingo. Now you’re getting it. You and everyone has the answers to their own questions. It’s just that most people cannot get past the ego to hear or see those answers.”
The boy looked back to the little man who waved good-bye and vanished.
“Wait, I didn’t get to say good-bye.”
“I am always here with you. You just have to listen and look for me. I am the tree and the butterfly in the world around you!”
