The Lottery Question

Posted - Jan• 23•15

If you had unlimited time, talent and money what would you do?    What if you had unlimited time?  What about if you had unlimited money?

Asking questions like this is a good way to help yourself define some of your beacons.    Lots of times, we get caught up in the reasons why we cannot do something and we cannot even think up our dreams anymore.   When a big lottery jackpot is the buzz across the country, people are sometimes interviewed for the nightly news and asked what they will do with the money.  This exercise is much the same.  Suppose you win the big mega-lottery today, what will you do tomorrow, and for the rest of your life?

Now, let’s suppose you uncover a couple of things.   Suppose you always wanted to learn how to paint.  Now with the big jackpot, you will finally have the time to do so.  Well, we have a surprise for you – you have the time now!

“Really?  No, I just can’t do it now because …”  Yes, you do have the time to follow your passions and your dreams.  The question is will you make the time and make it a priority?  No, it does not have to come at the expense of the family or your work.  All that needs to happen is that you commit to doing it.

Let’s suppose that you have young children and you work all day.   How in the world will you have time to paint?  Well, start to think about your day.  Maybe one night a week – say Friday night, you can paint after the children go to bed.   Maybe on Saturday, you paint while the children are doing another activity – possibly painting as well.  The problem is, we tend to make excuses that always transition into something else.

Pretty soon the children will be teenagers, driving and having a job, but we’ll make a different excuse.  “I’ll start painting when they leave for college.”   That’s all great, but who knows what your life will be then.  You might be working two jobs to help pay for their college!

The point we are trying to make is that we all need to have a dream.  We all need to be continually finding our passions – and enjoying those passions.  It does not matter if you are nine years old or ninety!  When we quit following our passions, we begin to go backwards.   Keep moving forward!

What would you do if you won the big lottery?  That is a good way to begin the  brain-storming exercise to uncover some hidden passions.  You will then find that you can start pursuing those passions now so you’ll have them in place when you someday win your own “lottery!”
