“Create a magical day,” were the words that kept going through the young girl’s thoughts.
“My nana would tell me that whenever she would say good-bye to me. I wonder what she really meant by that. I wished I would have asked her when I had the chance. Now it’s too late.”
The girl prepared for her day in her usual way. She opened her eyes as she spread the make up on her face. Her hair was perfect and she picked out one of her favorite outfits. Today was the first day of her new job. Actually, this would be her first job out of college in her new marketing career.
She gave herself plenty of time since she didn’t want to be late on her first day. “I think I’ll sit quietly for a few minutes to collect my thoughts.”
She sat in her special chair with her feet planted flat on the floor and closed her eyes. Almost immediately, her nana appeared to her in her mind’s eye.
“Nana, I was just thinking about you.”
“Yes, I know that is why I came to visit you.”
“How are you doing?”
“Oh, I am just wonderful, but that is not why I came to see you. I wanted to let you know that I am watching over you, and you are never alone.”
“Thank you, nana. That means a lot to me. I’m a little nervous about my new job. I hope I can impress them and am able to do the things they expect of me.”
“Oh, you will do great. Just be yourself and be honest with everyone, but most importantly with yourself.”
“Nana, what did you always mean when you would say to create a magical day?”
“Oh yes. You remember that, huh? Well, I was trying to remind you that you are in charge of your day. You actually create your own day – whether you would like to take that responsibility or not. Much like an artist creates an image from a blank canvas, you have the opportunity to create your day from a blank slate. You, in fact, are the artist of your day. It can be anything that you want.”
“I see. But, how do I create whatever I want when I have responsibilities, like my new job? I would like to go surfing today, but I have to go to work. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about my first day, but I know there will be days when I won’t be so excited.”
“Yes, that is absolutely correct. You have responsibilities that you need to work on each day. However, the canvas within those responsibilities is yours to create. You must work within the commitments that you have made, but you can create a magical day, nonetheless.”
The chime on her phone went off, and she quickly opened her eyes to leave for work. On the commute to her new office, she thought about her interesting conversation with her nana.
“I will create a magical day. This will be the first of many.” She repeated in her thoughts.
That night, as she laid in bed she thought about her first day. Originally, she was nervous, but decided that she had the choice to be confident. When she arrived at her new office, she placed out her hand and smiled at her new boss. Everyone, throughout the day she met with the same confidence. It seemed that she was a good fit for the job and liked her co-workers. The day just seemed to flow better than she could have hoped for. Her day was magical.
“Tomorrow, I’m also going to create a magical day, but first I’m going to have a magical night of sleep!”
