“I think the rain is finally letting up.”
The man said to his wife as he peered out the window of his countryside home. A home they had lived in for almost half a century. A home where they raised their three children, periodic life stock, and countless dogs.
Now it was getting to be a bit too much for the couple to manage. They were thinking about selling the property and moving to a new home with less land and less maintenance.
The water dripping into the bucket was beginning to slow. The rhythm of the drops was becoming much less frequent. The man reached for an empty bucket and replaced it with the one that was now half full.
“I have to say, I will not get tired of this leaky roof.”
“It’s been a good house, honey, but I think I’m okay with moving on as well.”
That afternoon, the couple met with their realtor who had chosen some houses to present to them. None of them were exactly what they were looking for, but they realized that none of them would be like what they now have. However, change was necessary and they didn’t want the children to have to deal with their years of belongings if they waited too long to make the move.
“I like this one, ” the man’s wife whispered.
“Sure then, I’m good with it, too.”
Several weeks later, the family gathered to help their parents with the move. The grandchildren were young and fit, and assembled to help as well.
When the last load of the truck was emptied into the new house, the family spent the rest of the day unpacking boxes and hanging pictures. That night, the family went back to their homes leaving the couple to themselves.
“Honey, I’m glad we made this move.”
“I am, too, but I know I’ll miss the old house.”
“I will, too, but we had to do it.”
“Yes, sometimes our bodies won’t let us do what we want anymore. Let’s enjoy wherever we are living – and the time we have left together.”
They looked out over the street at the other houses in their view as they sat on their front porch. The view had changed, but their attitudes remained the same. They were determined to enjoy life, no matter what it had in store for them.
