“What’s this for?” the boy asked his father.
“Just a little emergency money.”
“You know I’m not going to need it.”
“I know, but I would like you to have it.”
“Thanks.”
The boy then hugged his mother good-bye as she said, “Call me when you get there.”
“I will.”
The boy then shut the trunk to his car and headed back to college. On the way back to his new home he couldn’t help but think about all of the years growing up in his home. Now things are always going to be different, he thought.
As the drive continued the boy saw a deer on the side of the road. Cars were braking, and he did the same. Luckily, the deer escaped through the traffic unharmed and darted off into the distance. Jumping fences like they were not even there.
I wonder where that deer is going, he thought. If he would have been just a few seconds earlier, he might have hit it. How lucky, I was.
He continued on his drive, but could not help but wonder how it was that he missed the deer. If he would not have given his mom a hug, he probably would have hit it. If he would have gone just a mile an hour faster – he probably would have hit it. Was there someone guiding him?
Why is it that some people have the so-called “luck” while others do not. The deer could have come through his windshield and that would have been bad. What if the deer jumped right before he was to hit it? There were lots of “what ifs” that he thought about as he made the drive.
When he arrived back to his dorm on the college campus, he sent his mom and dad a “thumbs up” text. They replied with a “luv u” and he unloaded his car. He was happy to be back at college and to get on with the next chapter of his life, but at times it was a little challenging. The school work was demanding, his friends sometimes were challenging, and just being out on his own was fun – yet a bit scary.
Next year I’ll be getting an apartment, and I’m not sure who I’m going to live with yet. I better start figuring that out, he thought as he carried his basket of laundry up the stairs and down the hallway.
That night as he laid in bed, he thought once again about the near-miss with the deer. As he drifted off to sleep he had a dream.
The deer was speaking to him and said, “Johnny, I saw you coming and was not going to hit you, but I easily could have. However, you have much things to do and a whole life in front of you. It’s not your time, yet, so enjoy your life and live it to the fullest. Do not wait until later to do the things that you need to do today. Let go of the worry about the future, and be present in this moment. Live with an eye on the future, and a past full of lessons, but do not forget this moment. This is the moment that counts the most.”
The deer, once again darted off into the distance and turned his head in the shadows of the night. He had antlers that seemed to grow by the second. This was a wise deer. A deer that knows about life. A deer that understands humanity. This was no deer. This was Jonny’s guide.
Then a man came walking toward him. When the man reached Johnny, he said, “I am here to help and protect you. There are times when I will not be able to protect you, though, so you need to make good decisions and wise choices. When you are not sure which direction in life you should go, ask your heart and it will nudge you along your life’s path. Remember, though, that no matter which direction you choose – it’s all perfect!”
Johnny slept through the night and was awaken to his alarm the next morning, totally refreshed. He jumped out of bed like he’s never done before and welcomed the new day!

Life is precious, yet very resilient. Treat this moment with the respect and value for which it deserves. Lift yourself up by letting go of the needless mantras of the ego that might be bringing you down. Rather, appreciate and have gratitude for this lifetime – for it’s perfectly designed for you!
