Today is a Good Ol’ Day

Posted - Apr• 04•14

The man stared at the pictures on the wall.   He could remember the scene as though it was yesterday.  The children were young and playful, he was young and able, and life was good.

“It’s too bad I didn’t know it at the time,” he thought.   “I was so caught up in the stresses of my career that I feel like maybe I missed some of the good ol days.”

Then he made a vow to himself that the “good ol days” are not over and he will enjoy each day that lies before him.

“The last thing I want to do is to look back on this time in my life and realize that I missed these good ol days as well.  Yes, I will enjoy each day to its fullest so that I can learn from the days that I feel I missed.”

The man then grabbed his coat and his keys to drive to his grandson’s baseball game.

Often times, we feel that we “missed” some period in our life that we wish we could have back.  Even if we didn’t “miss it” we have some desire to have those days back.  However, as we all know, life keeps moving onward, one beat at a time, whether we want it to or not.

Rather than resisting the inevitable changes in our life, we need to understand that “change” is the constant in our lives.  We need to embrace the changes, understanding that today is the “good ol days.”  We need to realize that no matter how much we may like to go back to our younger years, when the children were still at home, it is not possible.

However, there is nothing wrong with going back through your memories.  After all, your memories live with you and everyone you’ve touched in your life, long after your return home.  The memories that you create today may be the memories you cherish most later in your life.

When you spend your days, wishing for the past, it is difficult to enjoy the present, and to create those memories to “bank away” for the future.  After all, relationships and memories “go with you” when you and the people in your life make the transition back to the non-physical world.

Smile about the past, and look to see what you can do this very moment to create more memories that you will cherish some day into the future.
