Who Am I?

Posted - Dec• 17•14

Who are you?  Do you ever ask yourself the question, “who am I?”   When you answer that question, be truthful.   If you are a person of integrity, step into it, and own it.  Rather than saying, “I try to live my life with integrity” say “I live my life with integrity.”   When we are doing a self-assessment of who we are, we need to be honest with ourselves, with no need for humility.

Similarly, you might ask yourself where you can improve?  Maybe you have a short-fuse and quickly lose your temper.  That does not mean you do not have empathy, integrity, and love.   It just means you might need to learn how to “pause” prior to communicating with others.   Look at the areas where you feel you can improve.  Do not “beat yourself up” over these areas.  You should be objective, without emotion.

After you have figured out who you are, and uncovered a few truthful areas for improvement, you can traverse through the maze of your day.  When we know what type of person we are, say a person of integrity, no one or anything can take that away from you.  If someone makes an off-handed comment that might question your integrity, you can simply dismiss it, since you know it is not true.   However, if you have not done a self-assessment to really own the fact that you have high integrity, such comments might make you feel insecure and feel the need to react.

When we understand and truly believe who “we are,”  nothing can come between that.  As such, we build the self-confidence necessary to dismiss any “attacks” either intentional or not.   Without doing a self-assessment, we look outward for “who we are” and let the world mold the view of ourselves.  This will always lead to conflicting ideas of our self, and prevent us from building the confidence necessary to grow.

Take the time to periodically, revisit the idea of “who am I?”  Rather than letting the world tell you who they think you are, you might as well figure it out for yourself – for you are the only one who knows your truth!
