“Where are you?”
“I am here, right next to you.”

Sometimes, we might wonder where our inner-self, that non-physical part of who we are, is. The spiritual side of ourselves sometimes may not seem to be with us. The thing that you should know is that your spiritual self is always with you. The problem sometimes is, though, that you cannot “see” it.
In order to connect with our inner-self (which we use synonymously with “spiritual self” or “non-physical self”), you must quiet your mind. We have talked about meditation techniques in the past. Keep in mind, though, that meditation and prayer are only techniques. There are many other ways to quiet the mind that might resonate with you.
For example, runners quiet their mind as they “drift away” while running great distances. Others might find that painting a picture allows for them to quiet their mind. Maybe for you, it’s rolling out the dough to make a pie, or baking a loaf of bread.
The important thing is that everyone develops a technique that works for them to quiet their mind. When you have a quiet mind, you provide an opportunity for your inner-self to communicate and connect with you. Think about how difficult it is to hear people sitting at your table in a loud night club. Your mind is like that night club, with loud noises making it difficult to hear your inner-self speaking to you.
Once you quiet your mind, you then need to disconnect from outcome. You might think that since you did not “hear” anything, you have failed. There are no failures. Sometimes, you might find that you have a random thought, say, maybe to call your father. That is your inner-self communicating with you. It may not be the revelation that you were looking for, but it is telling you what you need at this moment in time, to hear.
Other times, you might find that an issue at work keeps coming to mind that you cannot let go of. Well, then it is time to implement one of your “mind quieting techniques” so that you can clear that thought. Another approach might be to define the next step that you need to take when you get to work, so that you can let go of the need to rehash the issue in your mind.
Sometimes, organization of your life can help quiet the mind by releasing the “tasks” that you keep current in your memories so that you do not forget to do something. A simple list of tasks can help you release the need to keep those thoughts current in your mind.
