Change Encourages Growth

Posted - Feb• 12•16

“How can you always be so open to change?”

“Because I allow and encourage myself to grow!”

Do you ever catch yourself hanging onto some of your old beliefs and ways?  Maybe you think that when you were a young child or teenager and you made a decision, you now must stick with that decision decades later.   Yes, some decisions are life-long commitments.   However, in order to grow, you must evaluate some of those other decisions and decide if they still fit your “life’s model” or if they are holding you back.

For example, suppose you decided when you were a teenage, which political party for which you would like to be affiliated.  Now, decades later you are still in that party, not because you agree so much with it, but because it would almost be blasphemous to  switch.  In those cases, you are not evaluating that decision on a regular basis to see if it still makes sense.  Worse yet, you might be totally against other parties of which you may know little about.

When we make decisions or set a belief system in place, we should continually evaluate those decisions and allow ourselves to change.  When we change, we grow.  When we stay stagnate we start to wilt.  Look at areas in your life where you are “stuck” because you feel like you cannot re-evaluate a decision made by a teenager.   Would you let a teenage pick your political or religious affiliation today?

The other question to ask yourself is whether or not you care to grow.  You may not fully understand exactly what it means to grow, so we will start with that.  When we “grow” we are widening and opening our mind to all possibilities.  We are generally becoming more “uniting” in our mindset, beliefs, and actions.  We start to look beyond ourselves and think of others.  We even get to a point where we look beyond this lifetime and look to the infinite universe.  When we grow, we become more than ourselves.

Now, given that brief definition of growth, you might ask yourself if you feel like you have “growth” in your life.  If not, you might start to look for changes in your life in areas that might be holding you back to hang onto various beliefs and ways of life.  Remember, everything is in perfect order.  Today might be the day for change to begin in your life.

When we look at growth as an outcome of change, we can begin to embrace and accept the changes that are occurring in our lives.  Change is constant, which means growth is constant as well – if we let it!
