Life’s Plan

Posted - Apr• 08•16

“Do you hear the wind chimes way off in the distance?”

“Yes, I can hear them.”

“Do you see the wind causing the chimes to ding?”

“No, I can feel the wind, but I cannot see it.”

“Exactly.  That is the same as the universal winds of energy.  We cannot see that energy, but it is there much the same as the energy of the wind.”

“I think I’m getting it.”

The young man said good-bye to his teacher and went back to his room.  He had sought out a “great” teacher, but apparently, life had other plans.  Rather than travelling great distances across the Earth and climbing mountains – this teacher he met on the subway.  Yes, life shows us the path, but sometimes we refuse to see it when it doesn’t fit into our plans.

He was hoping to travel great distances to seek out a particular master teacher, but met his current teacher on his way to the university where he was studying.  As it turns out, his teacher had studied with many great spiritual teachers around the world.  His teacher was wise in his own way, but did not look and act like the masters he had studied.  However, he was quickly finding that appearances and “labels” do not matter nearly as much as he had once thought.

As he sat in his dorm room, he could hear the voices of other students on his floor.  He had started studying with his teacher many months ago.  Only he did not really know he was a teacher at all.

When they met on the subway, they quickly discovered that they both lived close to each other.  The young man had asked about the background of his new teacher, to learn that he had much experience in the spiritual studies that he was looking to pursue.  His new friend offered to show him how to meditate.  He accepted, and that became the beginning of their friendship.

Even though his older friend refuses to consider himself a teacher, he acknowledges that we all have things to learn from each other.  He admits that  he can be a “teacher” so long as he is also the “student,” for we are never done learning.  As their friendship grew, the college student realized that his friend is considered to be a “master” in many other cultures.  His modest friend, that refuses to be considered a teacher, is revered in other cultures as a guru!

As he thought about their relationship over the past months, the young student realized that everything is just that way it is supposed to be.  The saying, “when the student is ready the teacher will appear,” literally happened to him.  He wondered what else in his life “appeared” that he failed to notice.

For the next few days, he decided to let life show him the path.  When he made a decision to do something, he did not attach himself to it.  One night, he was determined to go to the library to study, when some friends asked him to dinner.  He decided that the studying could wait.  Later that evening he ran into a good friend he had not seen in many years.  They talked through the night and rekindled their forgotten friendship.

The next morning, he woke up early to go to the library and study.  While at the library he ran into one of his professors in a class for which he was having troubles.  He was able to get clarification on a concept for which he was having difficulty.

It seemed that when he was able to let go of his “plan” and open up to the “plan” of his life, everything almost magically fell into place.  He continued to be open to the world and to look for the signals telling him which “way” to go.

A few weeks later after his meditation with his teacher, he shared some of his experiences with letting go of his plans.

“Ah, yes.  You have found it!”

“Found what?”

“You have found the universal flow of energy.  You are the wind chime and the energy is making your music!”

The young man smiled, closed his eyes and vowed that he would continue to live in this way.

Although it may be challenging, when we live without connection to the plans we put forth, we allow for the universal winds of energy to make our music play!
